Monemvasia

The illustrious fortified-city of Monemvasia was established in Byzantine times and was one of the largest castles in Peloponnese. Over time, it has been known by many names and has known many masters. Monemvasia, Malvasia, Malvasoui, Outer Minoa, Little Gibraltar, or the Rock, as it has been known, was joined to the mainland by a wide stretch of land until a huge earthquake struck in AD 375, giving it its present shape and form. Walls protect the little town on three sides. There is a gate to the east, another to the west and a way out to the sea.

Its key location on the sea lane between East and West has made Monemvasia the most desirable prize for emperors, kings, sultans and pirates. Huge fortifications, imposing stone buildings and enormous churches are incontestable proof of the glory it has known.

Monemvasia is in two distinct parts; the Upper town on the fairly flat area on top of the rock, and the Lower town at its base. In days gone by both parts were protected behind the thick, castle walls. It was possible to get from one part to the other by a well-protected flight of steps hewn out of the rock. The only surviving building in the Upper town now is the Church of Saint Sophia, though the Lower town still maintains its mediaeval air.

Time stands still when you walk through the main gate into this enchanting walled town and make your way up the cobbled lanes. Your imagination carries you back to the days of illustrious emperors and bands of pirates. When you reach the top of the rock, you are rewarded by a cooling breeze and a wonderful view far across the Myrtoon Sea.
